A smoothing sample average approximation method for stochastic optimization problems with CVaR risk measure
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper is concerned with solving single CVaR and mixed CVaR minimization problems. A CHKS-type smoothing sample average approximation (SAA) method is proposed for solving these two problems, which retains the convexity and smoothness of the original problem and is easy to implement. For any fixed smoothing constant 2, this method produces a sequence whose cluster points are weak stationary points of the CVaR optimization problems with probability one. This framework of combining smoothing technique and SAA scheme can be extended to other smoothing functions as well. Practical numerical examples arising from logistics management are presented to show the usefulness of this method.

Data-driven satisficing measure and ranking
We propose an computational framework for real-time risk assessment and prioritizing for random outcomes without prior information on probability distributions. The basic model is built based on satisficing measure (SM) which yields a single index for risk comparison. Since SM is a dual representation for a family of risk measures, we consider problems constrained by Conditional value-at-risk (...
متن کاملAsymptotic Analysis of Sample Average Approximation for Stochastic Optimization Problems with Joint Chance Constraints via CVaR/DC Approximations
Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) has been recently used to approximate a chance constraint. In this paper, we study the convergence of stationary points when sample average approximation (SAA) method is applied to a CVaR approximated joint chance constrained stochastic minimization problem. Specifically, we prove, under some moderate conditions, that optimal solutions and stationary points obta...
متن کاملSample average approximation of expected value constrained stochastic programs
We propose a sample average approximation (SAA) method for stochastic programming problems involving an expected value constraint. Such problems arise, for example, in portfolio selection with constraints on conditional value-at-risk (CVaR). Our contributions include an analysis of the convergence rate and a statistical validation scheme for the proposed SAA method. Computational results using ...
متن کاملMinimizing CVaR and VaR for a Portfolio of Derivatives∗
Value at risk (VaR) and conditional value at risk (CVaR) are the most frequently used risk measures in current risk management practice. As an alternative to VaR, CVaR is attractive since it is a coherent risk measure. We analyze the problem of computing the optimal VaR and CVaR portfolios. In particular, we illustrate that VaR and CVaR minimization problems for derivatives portfolios are typic...
متن کاملConfidence Levels for CVaR Risk Measures and Minimax Limits*
Conditional value at risk (CVaR) has been widely used as a risk measure in finance. When the confidence level of CVaR is set close to 1, the CVaR risk measure approximates the extreme (worst scenario) risk measure. In this paper, we present a quantitative analysis of the relationship between the two risk measures and its impact on optimal decision making when we wish to minimize the respective ...
